URGENT TRAVEL UPDATE

Effective January 15, 2013 the Federal Mandated Real ID Act will become effective, which will not recognize the State Of New Mexico's licenses as valid identification at airport ticket counters or for entry into Federal buildings or complexes such as the state's large Kirtland and Holloman Air Force.

Governor Martinez and our state officials are inquiring to the Department of Homeland Security to see what can be done about this deadline. As of this date (December 04, 2012) the Department of Homeland Security said the act will be enforced. They state that they have every intention of maintaining the January 15, 2013 deadline.

If the state of New Mexico cannot come to compliance by the deadline date of January 15, 2013 than the implication for New Mexicans is how they will be able to use their driver's licenses.

The TSA security screeners will no longer accept a New Mexico driver's license as valid ID to board a plane.

Although there have been some announcements and updates on the Real ID Act, there still are many unanswered questions.

Those traveling in January and February, should obtain a valid passport as their official Federal issued Identification.

Please continue to monitor updates as they happen, but as the rule stands now effective on January 15, 2013 anyone without a passport will not be able to board an airplane out of New Mexico.
